Essential Carry-On Items for Stress-Free Travel: My Top 10 Picks

Traveling can be exhilarating, but it also comes with its fair share of challenges. One way to mitigate these challenges is by having the right items in your carry-on bag. Whether you're a seasoned globetrotter or a first-time traveler, here are my top 10 must-have carry-on items that will make your journey smoother and more enjoyable:

  1. Hand Sanitizer: Hygiene is paramount, especially when traveling through crowded airports and sitting in confined spaces like airplanes. A good hand sanitizer is your best defense against germs and bacteria, helping you stay healthy throughout your journey.

  2. Disinfecting Wipes: Along the same lines as hand sanitizer, disinfecting wipes are essential for wiping down tray tables, armrests, and other high-touch surfaces in airplanes and airport lounges. They provide an extra layer of protection against viruses and bacteria, giving you peace of mind during your travels. Post covid, I like to bring disposible face masks and wear one in the airport and on my flights. It’s a personal preference and maybe not right for everyone, but it’s something I’ve choosen to do minimize risks to others and myself.

  3. Stain Remover: Accidents happen, especially when you're on the move. That's why I always carry a stain remover pen such as a Tide pen in my carry-on bag. Whether it's a spill from in-flight turbulence or a mishap during a layover, having a stain remover handy can save your clothes and your day. No matter how hard I try to keep my clothes clean, I always seem to spill something on myself, especially when I’m wearing white or light coloured clothing. A stain remover pen has come in handy more times than I’d like to admit.

  4. Neck Pillow: Long flights and layovers can take a toll on your neck and shoulders. A comfortable neck pillow provides much-needed support, helping you relax and even catch some shut-eye during your journey. Look for one that's adjustable and made from soft, breathable materials for maximum comfort. My favourite neck pillow is the Trtl. I’m not affliated with the company or earn a commission by mentioning their product but it really has helped me sleep more comfortably on an overnight flight compared to some other pillows.

  5. Battery Pack: In today's digital age, staying connected is more important than ever. A portable battery pack ensures that your devices stay charged throughout your journey, whether you're scrolling through social media, listening to music, or navigating with GPS. Opt for one with multiple USB ports and sufficient capacity to charge all your devices. Be sure to put your battery pack in your carry on and not in your checked luggage. Funny story, but not really. I mistakenly put my battery pack in my checked luggage and because I didn’t fully understand the language, I said “no” to having a battery in my checked bag. Just as we were about to depart on the flight, I was called off the plane. I followed an airport employee across the tarmac and back to the airport, as the passengers on my flight looked on. Security briefly questioned me and unserstood that I just made a mistake. The experience was embarrassing and I held up the flight.

  6. AirTags: Losing your luggage can quickly turn a dream vacation into a nightmare. AirTags, or similar tracking devices, allow you to keep tabs on your belongings and locate them quickly if they go missing. Simply attach them to your luggage or other valuables and track their whereabouts using your smartphone. On one of my travels, my luggage didn’t make it to the carousel upon arrival. I could see that it was at the airport but some how it got misdirected. I was able to show the loction of my luggage to an airport employee who then quickly retreived it for me.

  7. Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is key to feeling your best while traveling. Due to the low humidity levels in airplane cabins, the air is typically drier than the air at ground level and humidity levels often drop to around 10-20%. This dry air can lead to increased moisture loss from the body through breathing and skin evaporation, resulting in dehydration. Also, altitude can exacerbate dehydration as the lower air pressure at cruising altitude can further increase the rate of fluid loss from the body. Therefore, it's essential to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water while flying to counteract these effects. Instead of relying on expensive airport bottled water, bring your own reusable water bottle and fill it up at water stations throughout the airport. Not only is it more eco-friendly, but it also saves you money in the long run.

  8. Lip Balm and Hand Cream: As mentioned above, the dry cabin air can leave your lips and hands feeling chapped and uncomfortable. Keep a nourishing lip balm and hand cream in your carry-on bag to keep your lips and hands hydrated and moisturized throughout your journey. Look for one with SPF for added sun protection.

  9. Packing Cubes: Packing cubes are a game-changer when it comes to organizing your luggage. They help maximize space, keep your belongings neatly separated, and make it easier to find what you need without having to rummage through your bag. Plus, they compress your clothes, allowing you to pack more efficiently.

  10. Change of Clothes: Lastly, always pack a spare outfit and pjs in your carry-on bag, especially if you're traveling long-haul or have a tight connection. In the event that your checked luggage gets lost or delayed, having a change of clothes on hand can be a lifesaver. Opt for comfortable, versatile pieces that can easily transition from day to night.

In conclusion, having the right items in your carry-on bag can make all the difference in ensuring a smooth and stress-free travel experience. From hygiene essentials to comfort items and emergency supplies, these 10 must-have items are sure to enhance your journey and leave you feeling prepared for whatever adventures lie ahead.
